Victorian 15ct Gold and Agate Intaglio Signet Ring
We recently acquired this exceptional signet ring, crafted in 15ct yellow gold and set with a rectangular green agate stone. The agate features an intaglio portrait of a man, with the name “Lord Jeffrey” engraved beneath.
Our research linked the engraving to a portrait dated circa 1825, titled Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey, 1773–1850. Judge and critic. The resemblance is striking, offering a fascinating glimpse into the identity behind the carving.
Francis Jeffrey (1773–1850) was a prominent Scottish judge and co-founder of The Edinburgh Review, one of the most influential literary journals of the 19th century. Renowned for his sharp literary criticism—particularly of Romantic poets like Wordsworth and Byron—Jeffrey played a significant role in shaping both literary taste and legal thought. This ring is a distinguished tribute to his enduring legacy.
