The opal is what we call a triplet. It consists of a top layer of quartz crystal that protects a thin layer of fine opal which in turn is backed with opal material of little colour known as potch. Doublets and triplets have been around for decades. They are very common and ensure that all parts of opal, especially the thin delicate seams of colour bearing crystal get used. There is nothing to be afraid of with this form of opal and are (by us anyway) priced accordingly.
The opal setting measures 8.5mm in diameter. The earrings as a whole measures 19mm from the very top of the bead to the very bottom of the opal setting.
